The V12 biturbo power unit has been extensively revised for its use in the new S-Class generation. The exhaust gas turbocharger, exhaust manifold and air routing have been adapted. Another new feature is a controlled particulate filter. The V12 has an output of 450 kW /612 hp and a displacement of 5,980 cm3. Maximum torque is 830 Nm from 2,000 rpm. Key engine features include all-aluminum crankcase, one-piece chain drive, forged crankshaft made of high-quality heat-treatable steel, forged pistons and multi-spark ignition with twelve dual ignition coils. Features of the all-wheel-drive system, combined for the first time with the twelve-cylinder engine, include low system weight, the best possible traction and driving safety, and maximum ride comfort and driving dynamics. The basic torque distribution for this model is 31 percent at the front and 69 percent at the rear axle. Among other things, the all-wheel drive has been adapted to the higher vehicle weight of the GUARD version with stronger side shafts.
