Early Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m., a fire broke out in an apartment on the first floor of a multi-family building on Gustav-Stresemann-Straße in Schwetzingen. According to initial findings, the fire started in the kitchen and quickly led to heavy smoke development. Alert witnesses immediately alerted the fire department. The alarm level was raised to F3, prompting the fire departments from Hockenheim, Brühl, and Plankstadt to be additionally alerted. The emergency services quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished the flames. The 44-year-old resident was able to leave the apartment before the fire department arrived but was taken to the hospital by the ambulance service with suspected smoke inhalation. Apartments above had to be evacuated as a precaution; the residents were able to return about 45 minutes later. According to the fire department, the affected apartment is currently uninhabitable. The property damage is estimated to be at least 50,000 euros. The Schwetzingen police are now investigating the as yet unclear cause of the fire.
