"At the start of the new S-Class, in-line six-cylinder engines are available as gasoline and diesel in various output levels. A V8 engine with integrated starter generator (ISG) and 48-volt electrical system will soon be added to the selection. A plug-in hybrid with a purely electric range of around 100 km will follow in 2021. With the introduction of the integrated starter-generator (ISG) in the S-Class with the M 256 in-line six-cylinder engine, the 48-volt vehicle electrical system celebrated its world premiere in 2017. The starter generator performs functions such as boosting or recuperation and enables fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. In the new Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC 320 kW/435 hp and offers 520 Nm of torque, the consistently electrified in-line six-cylinder engine delivers 320 kW/435 hp. EQ Boost provides a further 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp output in the short term. An intelligent turbocharging system with, among other things, an electric booster compressor and the integrated starter-generator ensure excellent power delivery without turbo lag. In addition, the engine starts extremely quickly and comfortably, so that the start-stop function is almost imperceptible for the driver.
