The striking design of the electrically powered S models is accompanied by aerodynamics that rely heavily on new technologies. With the virtual exterior mirrors - cameras that transmit their images to OLED displays in the interior - the cd values are just 0.26 for the Audi e-tron S Sportback and 0.28 for the Audi e-tron S. Another world innovation in large-series automotive engineering is the flow-through wheel arch trims on the front wheels. Narrow horizontal webs are positioned in the cutouts they have in the front area. They direct the airstream so that it flows cleanly around the wheels when driving straight ahead and encapsulates any disturbing turbulence in the wheel arches. The design of the standard 20-inch wheels and the profile and embossing on the flanks of the tires have also been optimized with this in mind. The flow-through wheel arch trims, for which Audi holds a patent, resolve the conflict between aerodynamics and sporty looks. They add around three kilometers to the range, about as much as the virtual exterior mirrors. An important component of the aerodynamic concept is the controllable cooling air intake with ducts for cooling the front wheel brakes. It remains closed as often as possible to allow the airstream to flow over the hood with almost no turbulence. And last but not least, the fully clad underbody, including an aluminum plate to protect the battery, also contributes significantly to the aerodynamics account.
