The overall drive system of the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT combines hydrogen fuel cell technology with BMW eDrive technology of the fifth generation, as already featured in the BMW iX3 and can soon also be experienced in the BMW iX and BMW i4. Energy is generated in the fuel cell as a result of a chemical reaction between the hydrogen carried with it and oxygen from the air. This generates an electrical output of 125 kW / 170 PS. An electrical converter located below the fuel cell adjusts its voltage level to that of the electric motor that drives the BMW i Hydrogen NEXT. The energy stored in a power buffer battery is also used for dynamic acceleration maneuvers and intermediate sprints for overtaking. This provides a system output of 275 kW / 374 PS, which corresponds exactly to the level of the most powerful in-line six-cylinder petrol engine currently used in BMW models and thus ensures the driving dynamics typical of the brand
