Venezuelan citizens queue for a second day in Caracas to enlist in the national militia after President Nicolas Maduro called on his government's political base to move forward with the formation of peasant and worker militias. Maduro said he would deploy 4.5 million militia members in response to US "threats," after Washington raised the bounty for his arrest and launched anti-drug operations in the Caribbean. Venezuela has responded by sending warships and drones to patrol its coastline and launching a drive to recruit thousands of militia members to bolster its defenses. IMAGES
The "worst-case scenario of famine" is "now unfolding" in Gaza, a UN-backed monitor warned, stressing that air-dropping food into the Palestinian territory was insufficient. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said air drops "will not be enough to reverse the humanitarian catastrophe," insisting that only "immediate, unimpeded" humanitarian access into Gaza can halt rapidly rising "starvation and death." Speaking on the report, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, says it "highlights that two out of the three famine thresholds have now been breached in parts of the territory."
