Vitamin B12 is important for energy production and some studies suggest it may also help with depression and prevent dementia.  Symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency vary widely, ranging from mild fatigue to severe neurological problems.  Those with a mild deficiency may feel tired, while those with a moderate deficiency may develop anemia.  Anemia can cause a vitamin B12 deficiency leading to cracks or sores in the mouth area.  A moderate deficiency of this important nutrient can also lead to peripheral neuropathies.  Severe vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to serious neurological and psychiatric problems, including irritability, perceptual disturbances, depression, psychosis, and dementia.  Those most at risk of developing a vitamin B12 deficiency are individuals who consume few animal products.
