Tension Headaches: How They Develop and How to Alleviate Them

Source: VIDEOELEPHANT (Glomex)

Tension headaches often feel like a tight hat or belt around the head, and many do not know how to alleviate them. They often occur with stress and are described as dull, pressing pains in the forehead or back of the head. They usually disappear after hours or days without accompanying symptoms, but chronic forms can be more burdensome and may be accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity. Causes are often stress, physical exertion, poor posture, muscle tension, dehydration, screen work, and lack of sleep. Chronic tension headaches can also have genetic and psychological causes. To treat them, doctors recommend gentle exercise like walks in the fresh air or yoga. Other options include applying peppermint oil to the temples or drinking an espresso. Painkillers should only be taken as a last resort and according to recommendations.
