A recent study suggests that probiotics could support weight loss in dogs. Researchers examined the gut microbiome of young and old dogs, finding a decrease in two lactic acid bacteria species, Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus, in older dogs. To test the effects of these bacteria on obesity, two specific strains, Enterococcus faecium IDCC 2102 and Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301, were administered to a group of Beagles on a high-fat diet. Surprisingly, the Beagles reduced their weight and body fat while simultaneously boosting their energy metabolism. The study highlights the potential of tailored probiotics to enhance pet health and underscores the need for further research in this area
