Coronavirus: New omicron variant XBB.1.5. detected for the first time in Lower Saxony

The Lower Saxony State Health Office detected the corona variant XBB 1.5 for the first time in Lower Saxony on Friday. XBB 1.5 is an omicron variant that first appeared in the USA and is expected to spread in Europe in the long term. There is currently no evidence of more severe disease progression compared to other omicron variants. However, the government of Lower Saxony is appealing in particular to the unvaccinated to get vaccinated now. Older people should brush up on their vaccination protection. The mask requirement, on the other hand, will be lifted on local and long-distance public transport in Lower Saxony and Bremen from February 2.
