Research reveals link between diet and depression

Research studies have found that diet can be a common cause of symptoms of depression and anxiety, especially in women. A study led by Mary Scourboutakos of East Virginia Medical School has found that diet-induced blood sugar fluctuations affect both a person's hormones and nervous system. This highlights the close connection between diet and emotions, emphasizing the importance of considering diet in mental health treatment. Foods with a high glycemic index, such as white rice and bread, cause sharp blood sugar spikes and increase the risk of anxiety and depression. Overconsumption of these foods can lead to an increase in insulin levels, causing blood sugar levels to drop and adrenaline to be released. This can sometimes manifest as anxiety, fear, or aggression. Research findings suggest that women may be more sensitive to the effects of high glycemic index foods and should use their diet to optimize mood. Alternating the order of foods during a meal and omitting carbohydrates at the end can help stabilize the mind and body. Foods like vegetables, vinegar, and olive oil can also help reduce the risk of blood sugar spikes and slow down carbohydrate absorption.
