The M HYBRID Drive of the new BMW M5 consists of a 4.4-liter V8 engine with a classic high-rev concept and an E-machine integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with model-specific power characteristics. The combustion engine features state-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, and optimized oil separation. It delivers a maximum power of 430 kW/585 PS and a maximum torque of 750 Nm. The electric motor has a maximum power of 145 kW/197 PS. Its nominal torque amounts to 280 Nm and is increased to an effective value of 450 Nm at the gearbox input through a pre-reduction. The combination of combustion and electric motor follows the principle also applied in the drive of the long-distance racing car BMW M Hybrid V8. The immediately available power of the E-machine from a standstill and the intelligently controlled interaction of both motors ensure a delay-free response of the M HYBRID system to every movement of the accelerator pedal. The linear power development typical of BMW M cars achieves a particularly fascinating character. The maximum speed of the eight-cylinder is 7,200 min-1. In the new BMW M5, continuous thrust is perceptible even in the highest load and speed ranges. Its top speed is limited to 250 km/h as standard. The limit can be raised to 305 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.
