At least four whales were washed ashore dead after the earthquake that struck Eastern Russia on July 30, 2025, the strongest worldwide since the Fukushima earthquake in 2011. The unprecedented magnitude 8.8 earthquake had its epicenter off the coast of Kamchatka in the Bering Sea at a depth of about 20 km. According to scientists, the whales may have been affected by a seismic shift, causing them to be disoriented by the sound wave generated by the tsunami. There are no official confirmations, but images of the large mammals on Japanese beaches are circulating on social media. The earthquake has claimed many casualties, although there is no official toll yet. However, the consequences may not yet be fully visible in all their drama. In several countries around the Pacific, a tsunami warning was issued by the Pacific Warning Tsunami, with waves that could reach a height of more than 3 meters.
