New Toyota Corolla - The changes in detail

To reduce weight and size, Toyota has studied all the main components of the full hybrid system. The goal: the greatest possible efficiency and reliability despite the power increases. A new Power Control Unit (PCU) reduces electrical losses by 14 percent (1.8-liter hybrid) and six percent (2.0-liter hybrid) while maintaining fuel efficiency. A new double-sided cooling system and smoother running, which among other things also reduces noise levels, have a positive impact here. The PCU is installed directly above a new transaxle transmission featuring a compact, powerful motor-generator with new internal parts for greater efficiency and dynamics. A new stator coil winding process has helped reduce the size of the motor. Thanks to the use of new materials, the transmission is also 15 percent lighter overall than before. Thin-bodied oil reduces internal friction and helps improve overall efficiency. Other detailing measures include smaller gears with newly profiled teeth that provide a larger contact area, and a smaller and lighter differential.
