The BMW i4 - integrating electromobility into series production

Source: AutoMotoTV (Glomex)

The BMW i4 differs from conventional architectures primarily in its electric drive and high-voltage battery. Despite this, the Munich body shop succeeded in using around 90 percent of the existing production facilities for the BMW i4 as well. Additional equipment is only required in isolated cases for the production of the floor assembly and the rear end. The integration of the high-voltage battery assembly was also highly complex. A new fully automatic battery assembly system bolts the battery to the body from below. High-resolution camera systems check the surface of the high-voltage battery fully automatically before installation to prevent contamination and resulting damage. With the BMW i4, the BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 3 Series Touring - both with combustion engines and hybrid drive - as well as the BMW M3 and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Group's main plant produces a broadly diversified product portfolio. It thus demonstrates both its flexibility and the high level of expertise of its employees.
