On Tuesday evening, the fire department had to respond twice to a recycling plant on Werner-Siemens-Straße in the Hamburg industrial area of Billbrook. The second alarm came in at 8:19 p.m. Within minutes, a huge, pitch-black column of smoke rose above Billbrook. The smoke cloud was visible from all parts of Hamburg and drifted towards the city center. By 9 p.m., the fire department warned residents via the 'NINA' warning app to keep windows and doors closed and ventilation systems turned off.
