Deutsche Telekom is improving its cell phone network along German highways in cooperation with Autobahn GmbH. The first of a total of 400 new radio masts will be put into operation at the A1 Schellenbach service area in Saarland. These masts are located much closer to the lanes and offer downloads of at least 200 megabits per second. Telekom currently has 6,300 mobile phone masts along the freeways, but the new installations should be better positioned and minimize the number of dropped connections. Other mobile providers such as Vodafone and Telefónica Deutschland are also working on similar agreements with Autobahn GmbH, but are not yet as advanced. According to the Federal Network Agency, there were still areas along the federal highways without seamless 4G coverage in the summer, which shows the need to improve the network. Improving the mobile network will significantly increase the connection quality on German highways.
