In China, research on bats has led to the discovery of 20 new, previously unknown virus species. Two of them are particularly concerning for researchers. These are two viruses related to Nipah and Hendra, known to cause diseases with high mortality rates in humans. The RNA viruses Nipah and Hendra, both transmitted by these mammals, infect humans and other animals, including pigs and horses, and often have a fatal outcome.
