They can't be friends.
Valentine's Day is a day loved by some and despised by others, but most of us are unaware of its violent origins. The day has its roots in the 3rd century with a priest named Valentinus of Terni. Defying Emperor Claudius II's decree that young men should not marry, Valentinus secretly performed wedding ceremonies for young couples. His defiance led to his beheading on February 14, prompting the Catholic Church to recognize him as a saint. Some speculate that Valentine's Day is also linked to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, where fertility and purification were celebrated. The condemnation of this tradition eventually led to the establishment of Valentine's Day on February 14, 496 AD. The modern, commercialized celebration we know today took shape in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1913, Valentine's Day cards were mass-produced by Hallmark Cards, solidifying February 14 as the ultimate day of romance.
The alarming findings were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society Journal on Wednesday.
