Over 400,000 pathogens adhere to them: Should shoes be taken off before or only in the house?
Shoes on or off in the house? This topic is seen differently in many cultures. Here is a clear answer from science. Up to 400,000 pathogens accumulate on shoes during the day. These microorganisms can come from public streets, meadows, or shops. Animal droppings also contribute to this bacterial culture. The grooves and patterns in the soles provide ideal conditions for bacteria and viruses to settle and multiply. Hiking shoes and shoes with deep treads are particularly problematic. The reason: They can absorb more dirt and pathogens. Those who wear their shoes in the house spread these pathogens on the floor and carpet. Studies show that 90 percent of germs are transferred from the shoe sole to the floor. This can lead to bacteria and viruses spreading throughout the home and transferring to other objects. Particularly concerning is the bacterium Clostridium difficile. Why? It was found on 40 percent of the shoe soles examined, can cause intestinal diseases, and pose serious health risks. So: It's better to take off your shoes right outside the door and place them on a mat in the hallway.
