Why Replacing Butter with Vegetable Oils Can Promote Heart Health
A new study suggests that reducing butter consumption and increasing the intake of vegetable oils can increase life expectancy. The researchers analyzed data from over 200,000 participants over a 33-year period and found that those who consumed the most butter (13-14 grams daily) had a 15% higher risk of early death. In contrast, those who consumed a lot of plant oils like soy, rapeseed, and olive oil (about 25 grams daily) had a 16% lower risk. Replacing just one teaspoon of butter with vegetable oil per day was associated with a 17% lower risk of death. The study also found that an additional intake of 10 grams of vegetable oil per day was associated with an 11% lower risk of cancer-related death and a 6% lower risk of cardiovascular death. Experts emphasize that while butter is not inherently harmful, moderation is key. The American Heart Association recommends limiting saturated fats, such as those found in butter, to less than 6% of daily calories. They recommend replacing animal fats with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats for better health outcomes. Marie-Pierre St-Onge, a nutrition expert at Columbia University, advises focusing on the benefits of vegetable oils rather than fearing butter. Other experts agree that occasional butter consumption is not harmful, especially for individuals with an otherwise balanced diet. Despite claims circulating on the internet criticizing seed oils, researchers state that there is no scientific evidence that they pose a health risk. Instead, the data consistently show that a diet rich in vegetable oils and low in animal fats is associated with better health and a longer life.
