In the DFB Cup quarterfinals, Holstein Kiel and Rot-Weiss Essen will play the duel of the underdogs. While the Essen team won the cup once in 1953, the North Germans could make club history by reaching the semifinals. On the way there, they eliminated FC Bayern, among others.
