The BMW Startup Garage and the Munich-based company DeepDrive are bringing a revolutionary electric motor with dual rotor to road testing. The concept promises powerful drives with high efficiency and range. After a successful pilot project with promising test bench results, the BMW Group and DeepDrive are now planning a first practical test. The driving characteristics of different variants of the drive will be tested on the road in models of the BMW Group. DeepDrive's innovative concept enables extremely compact drives with low consumption and high torque density by combining virtually two electric motors in one. Conventional electric motors consist of a stator that moves either an internal or an external rotor. In DeepDrive's dual rotor concept, the stator drives both an internal and an external rotor simultaneously. The compact design and low weight allow for In-Wheel-Drive-Train drives, where a separate electric motor sits directly in each wheel hub. The technology can also be used in the classic central drive, where a central motor block drives the vehicle.
