The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology used in the BMW i7 is constantly being developed to achieve further advances in both performance and efficiency. This applies to the drive and power electronics as well as the high-voltage battery and charging technology. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive has highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles, in which the electric motor, power electronics and transmission are combined very compactly in a common housing. The two motors operate on the principle of a current-excited synchronous machine. Thanks to this design, it is possible to completely dispense with the rare earth metal raw materials required for magnetic components in the manufacture of the rotor.
