The submitted film must be at least 40 minutes long and shown on 35mm or 70mm film or in a digital format at 24 or 48 frames. According to the rules of the Oscars, a film must run for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial cinema, with three daily screenings. The screening must also take place in one of six metropolises: Los Angeles, New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami, or Atlanta. A film must have its first public screening in a cinema and is not eligible if it premieres on television or DVD. The film must have been shown between January 1 and December 31 of the year before the awards ceremony. Finally, all submissions must be made within 60 days of the film's premiere.
