The EU calls on India and Pakistan to act immediately to deescalate after the most serious military confrontation between the nuclear-armed neighbours in two decades. "We do urge both sides to show restraint and take immediate steps towards de-escalation. The EU recalls the need for a negotiated, mutually agreed and lasting peaceful solution to the conflict," EU foreign affairs spokesman Anouar El Anouni tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood says refugee status in the UK will become temporary, with refugees only able to renew if it is impossible to return to their home country. In an overhaul of government policy, refugee status will last two and a half years rather than five and the time required for refugees to secure permanent settlement will rise from 5 years to 20. The move to tighten is aimed at discouraging migrants crossing the Channel from France in small boats. SOUNDBITE
