Cubs and sub adults jostled to claw their way up the trunk and one large female had a precarious time negotiating the upper branches. "I love this sport, and I didn't want to be done with it," says American artistic and synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez, who almost drowned at the World Championships two years ago when she fainted. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, "swam the fastest swim of her life" to save her, and the images travelled the world. Since then, the athlete, who is competing for the third time at the Olympics, has been monitored "every two weeks" to prevent a similar tragedy, according to the coach of the US artistic swimming team.
