A recent case study suggests that cannabis could be a "useful alternative" treatment option for dogs suffering from a common skin disease. Researchers documented the effectiveness of CBD oil in treating discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss and skin inflammation. Traditionally, DLE is treated with corticosteroids and other medications that can burden the dog's liver. In this study, a veterinarian prescribed a full-spectrum oil with a THC:CBD ratio of 2:1, administered orally. The dog showed a significant improvement in dermatological symptoms and improved liver function within a few weeks. Compared to corticosteroids, cannabis derivatives have "no significant side effects and are safe for long-term use". "Cannabis derivatives are not only pain-relieving but also emerging as potential knights in shining armor against inflammation and immune system overload in veterinary medicine," the discussion section states. Recent research also confirms the effectiveness of CBD in reducing stress and anxiety during car rides in dogs. Other studies have shown a decrease in the frequency of seizures in dogs receiving CBD and an improvement in symptoms in dogs with arthritis.
