Images of the Superior Court of Cundinamarca in Bogota where Alvaro Uribe's lawyers filed an amparo petition, a constitutional mechanism for individuals to seek judicial protection when they believe their rights have been violated by the government. With the petition, Uribe is asking the Supreme Court to grant him his freedom while he appeals his conviction. On July 1, Alvaro Uribe, 73, was sentenced to 12 years of house arrest after being found guilty of witness tampering and "procedural fraud," becoming the country's first former leader to be convicted of a crime.
