Paraguay: Conservative economist Peña wins presidential election

In Paraguay, the candidate of the ruling right-wing Colorado party, Santiago Peña, has won the presidential election. The 44-year-old economist and ex-finance minister prevailed against Efraín Alegre of the center-left Concertación alliance. Peña faces major challenges: Paraguay is struggling with poverty, corruption and drug-related crime. "Today, we are celebrating the victory of people who with their vote chose the path of social peace, dialogue, brotherhood and national reconciliation," he said.
