The steering wheel is almost as old as the automobile itself. And it is a given that a vehicle will drive in the direction desired according to the motion of the steering wheel. But the technologies behind it are complex and have become increasingly sophisticated in recent decades. The developers at Audi are working on the perfect combination of dynamic handling and comfort. At the same time, steering assistance functions offer added safety and support in everyday driving – for changing lanes, swerving, and parking. As a result, the steering wheel is increasingly emerging as a communication device, moving away from the standard wheel and toward becoming a high tech command center.

With their detailed analyses and precise optimisation, the development and test engineers seek to ensure that the new luxury sedans offer the best comfort experience ever realised in a BMW. This also includes an analysis of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In the so-called EMC absorber hall at the FIZ, prototypes of the new luxury sedans are exposed to powerful electromagnetic fields so as to test the susceptibility of their electrical systems to interference and see how they interact with the environment. The test engineers are able to analyse the diagnostic results transmitted from the vehicle in real time via fibre optic cables. The test programme in the EMC absorber hall enables comprehensive protection of the entire vehicle, ensuring absolutely reliable functioning of the suspension control and assistance systems and interference-free reception of online data, telephone, radio, TV and navigation signals.
Clad in a sharper design that reflects its sporty yet robust character, the sixth-generation Forester stretches to 4.67 meters in length. Occupants enjoy plenty of space in the front and rear with a 2.67-meter wheelbase. There are also many features that make both short and long journeys particularly comfortable. Dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats are standard, as are a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, a multi-information display, a rearview camera, and an audio system with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, DAB+ digital radio, USB ports, six speakers, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Qi charging cradle charges your smartphone wirelessly. Safety is ensured by the enhanced Eyesight system, which combines various assistance systems such as emergency braking, active lane keeping and lane control, stop-and-go assist, and multinational traffic sign recognition. A driver detection system that warns of drowsiness and distraction, as well as radar-based lane change, blind spot, and rear cross-traffic assist are also on board. The Subaru model is powered by a 100 kW/136 hp 2.0-liter boxer gasoline engine, assisted by a small electric motor. The standard e-Boxer mild hybrid system improves responsiveness and fuel efficiency. Power is transferred to all four wheels by the continuously variable Lineartronic automatic transmission.
