Health experts in the United Kingdom have identified a new COVID-19 variant, XEC, as the country prepares for the usual rise in winter infections. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) observed a slight increase in hospital admissions with 4.5 admissions per 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 6. XEC, belonging to the Omicron family, is a recombinant strain that combines genetic material from two other variants, KS.1.1 and KP.3.3. It was first discovered in May and has been monitored globally by the World Health Organization (WHO) since. While analysts on social media predict that XEC could trigger a winter surge, health authorities have not specifically raised alarms due to this variant. UKHSA found that about 9.35% of recent COVID cases between September 2 and 15 belonged to the XEC lineage, while KP.3.3 accounted for over 59% of cases. Despite the increasing prevalence of XEC, the proportion of XEC cases to total cases remains low, and experts are closely monitoring this variant. The symptoms of XEC are similar to those of other COVID strains, including high fever, cough, loss of smell and taste, fatigue, and body aches. Health authorities continue to advise staying at home and avoiding contact with others when symptoms occur. Although XEC is under observation, there is currently no evidence that it poses a greater threat than other variants. UKHSA recommends remaining vigilant and taking precautions to protect against COVID-19, especially as winter approaches.
