Extreme onset of winter: town in the USA drowns in snow

Source: WEATHER STORY (Glomex)

It is a classic extreme weather situation that is currently afflicting the northern US state of New York. Icy polar air from Canada is flowing over the Great Lakes, which are still relatively warm, and causing a persistent snowfall locally due to the so-called "Lake Effect". Again and again, heavy snow showers with embedded thunderstorms pass over the same region. Especially affected is the region around Buffalo. At the moment it is still snowing heavily, but already huge amounts of snow have fallen. Roads, houses and cars are sinking in the masses of snow. The walk with the dog becomes a challenge, if the four-legged friends also have a huge fun with it. Locally, up to 2 meters of fresh snow can fall, while only a few kilometers away from the shower roads the sun shines. This weather situation occurs every now and then at the Great Lakes and provides for extreme weather conditions, which one knows in Europe in such a way only in the absolute congestion positions of the Alps. The Lake Effect also exists in Germany, e.g. at the Baltic Sea. Coincidentally, we have a similar weather situation in the far northeast right now, although not nearly as much snow will fall as in the United States.
