If you love carbonated water, we have good news for you: it could surprisingly boost your metabolism. A study by the Japanese Tesseikai Neurosurgery Hospital suggests that the carbon dioxide (CO2) in sparkling water could subtly help your body process sugar more effectively. When you drink sparkling water, the CO2 passes through the stomach wall into your bloodstream and interacts with red blood cells. These cells, equipped with the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, convert CO2 into bicarbonate, creating a slightly alkaline environment that activates sugar-processing enzymes. This metabolic effect mirrors what scientists observe in kidney dialysis, where CO2 mechanisms help lower blood sugar levels. Although the effects are small - blood sugar levels decrease only by a tiny amount - the bubbles can also curb appetite by expanding in the stomach and creating a feeling of fullness. In combination with a healthy diet and regular exercise, sparkling water could be a small but refreshing tool for weight control. However, moderation is key. Excessive consumption of carbonated beverages can lead to bloating or discomfort, especially in individuals with sensitive stomachs. And always watch out for additives like sugar or sodium in your sparkling water.
