Eating strawberries every day can boost brain function and even lower blood pressure, according to a new study. The study, conducted by San Diego State University, involved 35 older adults who consumed 26 grams of strawberry powder daily for eight weeks. The researchers then measured blood pressure, waist circumference and certain cognitive markers. "After 8 weeks of daily strawberry consumption, cognitive processing speed increased by 5.2%," explained Dr. Shirin Hooshmand, the study's principal investigator. In addition, systolic blood pressure decreased by 3.6%, while total antioxidant capacity increased by 10.2%. Strawberries have many benefits: One cup contains three grams of fiber and about 11 grams of carbohydrates. Strawberries also contain vitamin C and have powerful antioxidants that can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
