An Italian man who was transitioning was found to be five months pregnant after a mastectomy. The person, who took the name Marco, was about to undergo a hysterectomy when the discovery was made. Doctors at a hospital in Rome were concerned about the welfare of the fetus given the advanced stage of Marco's transformation. He has developed extra body and facial hair following hormone therapy, which experts say may pose a cardiac risk to the baby. "If the therapy is not interrupted immediately, this could have consequences, especially in the first trimester, an important time for the development of the baby's organs. It depends on the timing of the suspension of testosterone administration," said Giulia Senfonte, an endocrinologist and expert in gender therapy. Marco is expected to carry the pregnancy to term and is the biological mother of the child, but is registered as the father. According to online reports, Marco opted for the conversion years ago after feeling uncomfortable as a woman.
