The Trump administration has ordered the destruction of contraceptives worth $9.7 million after they were stored in a Belgian warehouse for months. The supplies, including pills, coils, and hormonal implants, were originally purchased by the US development aid organization USAID to support family planning programs in low-income countries. According to inventory lists, none of the products were abortion-promoting agents. Nevertheless, they were appropriately marked by officials and released for disposal. The destruction, costing taxpayers an additional $167,000, took place despite offers from global organizations like the Gates Foundation, which wanted to take over the supplies for free. Health experts stated that the warehouse, with expiration dates into the 2030s, could have prevented millions of unintended pregnancies and maternal deaths. Senator Jeanne Shaheen condemned the decision as "inhumane" and "wasteful," warning that it was part of a broader campaign against reproductive rights. Critics also pointed out that this step wasted urgently needed resources that could have helped women in refugee camps and crisis areas. The government defended the measure citing its opposition to abortion – even though the destroyed products were not abortion agents.
