Mass pile-up in Bavaria - 24 vehicles involved - accidents in both directions

Presumably due to black ice, there was a mass crash on the A70 near Schirradorf in the district of Kulmbach in Bavaria this morning. Pile-ups occurred in both directions of travel. In the direction of Bamberg, 13 cars and a truck collided. Another ten vehicles collided at the same height on the opposite carriageway. According to current information, there were several casualties, one person is considered seriously injured. Several rescue helicopters were deployed. A large contingent of rescue workers is still at the scene. Eyewitnesses report a sleet shower and difficult conditions on the road. It is still unclear whether inappropriate speed or insufficient distance played a role in the weather. The traffic police have started an investigation. Caution is still advised. It remains cold and showers can quickly lead to black ice.
