A study with 200 people over 50 years old found that a Nordic diet lowers cholesterol levels, even without weight loss. The Nordic diet typically consists of berries, vegetables, fish, whole grains, dairy products, and canola oil. Participants were divided into two groups, one of which followed a Nordic diet for six months while the other served as a control group. All participants had a high body mass index and an increased risk of developing diabetes and heart disease at the start of the study. Those on the Nordic diet had significantly lower cholesterol levels and lower levels of saturated and unsaturated fats in the blood. Those who ate Nordic also had better blood sugar regulation than the control group. Interestingly, participants did not need to lose weight to notice these benefits. Researchers believe that the high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the Nordic diet may be a reason for the positive health effects.
