The name MILANO is deeply rooted in the history of Alfa Romeo

Few things shape the identity of a car manufacturer more than its brand logo. Since its foundation in 1910, the Alfa Romeo emblem has contained two symbols that stand for Milan: The cross is the historical symbol of the capital of the northern Italian province of Lombardy. And the snake, called "biscione" in Italian heraldry, stands for the noble Visconti family, which played an important role in historic Milan. For more than 60 years, from 1910 to 1972, the lettering MILANO was also part of the logo. Until 1918, it was accompanied by the acronym A.L.F.A., which stood for the company's original name Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. In 1919, A.L.F.A. was replaced by ALFA ROMEO.
