Over two model generations, the Tiguan has become one of the world's most successful sport utility vehicles. For the brand and the Group, it has become one of the main product pillars since its world premiere in 2007 at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt. In 2011, there was a first comprehensive model update, and in 2015 Volkswagen presented the completely new Generation II of the Tiguan based on the Modular Transverse Toolkit (MQB). It was launched in April 2016, kicking off Volkswagen's globally oriented SUV offensive. XL version crowns second generation of the Tiguan. In 2017, the Tiguan debuted as an XL version with a longer wheelbase (plus 110 mm), larger luggage compartment (plus 145 liters) and individualized front and rear sections. The first production site for the SUV, which can be ordered as a five-seater or seven-seater with a third row of seats, is the Mexican plant in Puebla. The independent version for the Chinese market is produced by SAIC-Volkswagen under the name Tiguan L at the Anting plant near Shanghai. In America and China, Volkswagen offers the second-generation Tiguan exclusively in the long version. In Europe and many other markets around the world, the long model variant is being launched as the Tiguan Allspace.
