Fatal police operation after threat with knife in Mannheim

Mannheim: On Saturday afternoon, December 23, 2023, an incident occurred in Johann Schütte-Straße in Mannheim-Schönau in which the police made use of their firearms. According to investigations so far, a 49-year-old man is said to have contacted the police via the emergency number and stated that he had committed a crime. The police officers who were called found the man in front of the residential building they were called to. The 49-year-old was carrying a knife and threatened the officers. In the course of the operation, the police officers made use of their firearms. According to eyewitnesses, four shots were fired. The shots injured the 49-year-old, who was immediately resuscitated and taken to hospital. He later died there. The investigation into the use of firearms by the police was taken over by the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation in coordination with the public prosecutor's office in Mannheim.
