The new Honda Civic Type R - exterior design - striking, powerful and aerodynamic

The new Civic Type R was developed as part of the "Ultimate Sports 2.0" model concept. Building on the sleek and elegant silhouette of the new Honda Civic e:HEV, the Type R presents itself more sporty and squat, perfectly expressing the dynamic character of the vehicle. The new Civic Type R is eight mm lower and 90 mm wider than the Civic e:HEV. Sculpted wheel arches characterize the flat and muscular appearance; they surround highly rigid and lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels in matte black covered with 265/30 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. All surfaces of the vehicle have a functional purpose. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technologies were used to significantly reduce drag, optimize airflow around the car and reduce pressure fluctuations. To this end, Honda shared ideas and information with selected partners from its global network of racing suppliers - including WTCR supplier J.A.S. Motorsport and Super GT engineers from HRD's Sakura plant. There are also other detail improvements such as the large air outlets behind the front wheels, which help to reduce air pressure in the wheel arches. The airflow exiting these ducts is directed over the sides of the vehicle and the side sill before being diverted away from the rear wheel arch and overhang by the small spoiler at the end of the sill.
