The winners of the seven qualifying groups were supposed to take part in the final round of the 1992 European Football Championship from June 10 to 26 alongside hosts Sweden, but UEFA withdrew the team from Yugoslavia just over a week before the opening match due to the Balkan war. As a result, the team from Denmark, who finished second behind Yugoslavia in the qualifying group, moved up and surprisingly paved their way to the title. Coach Richard Møller Nilsen's team first survived the group stage against Sweden, England and France and then eliminated the defending champions from the Netherlands on penalties in the semi-finals. In the final on June 26 in Gothenburg, Denmark then won its first major title against Germany, with the two goals in the 2:0 final score being the result of controversial decisions by the referee.
