Dean Cain criticized the direction Hollywood is taking Superman in, calling recent portrayals too "woke". Cain, who played the lead role of Superman in "Lois & Clark", expressed concern about how much beloved characters like Superman are being changed "to survive in today's time". He particularly criticized Superman's updated motto of "Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow", stating that the original phrase included "the American way" for a reason. Portraying Superman as a story of immigrants, as director James Gunn has done, is a "mistake" that could harm the film. Gunn had originally told the Sunday Times, "'Superman' is America's story... an immigrant from another place." Cain argued that the USA is already "immigrant-friendly" and warned against dropping "rules" that he believes are essential for society to function. Despite his concerns, Cain said he "hopes the film is successful" and praised the film's tone and humor. When asked about the reactions at the premiere, Gunn said, "This is a film about kindness... I think it's suitable for everyone."
