Harvey Weinstein's lawyer says he could testify in an upcoming retrial

According to his lawyer Arthur Aidala, Harvey Weinstein may testify at his upcoming retrial. While it is rare for defendants in high-profile cases to take the stand, Aidala said they have discussed this possibility and called it a strategic decision. Weinstein, 72, was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for sexual assault and third-degree rape. His conviction was overturned last April, and his retrial is set to begin on April 15, with pre-trial hearings starting on March 12. Aidala said Weinstein has reviewed thousands of pages of trial transcripts and taken notes. "He is looking forward to finally clearing his name," Aidala claimed. The defense argues that all encounters were consensual and that Weinstein's history with women, including his ex-wife Georgina Chapman, supports this portrayal. "His version of events was that everything was always consensual... he had a history of courting beautiful women, you can look at his two wives, including Georgina Chapman, who was at the Oscars. [He says] everything he really did was consensual," said Arthur Aidala. Weinstein remains incarcerated at Rikers Island but is also serving a 16-year sentence for his 2022 conviction in California. His lawyer believes that Weinstein was unfairly judged during his 2020 trial due to the influence of the #MeToo movement. Despite his legal troubles, Weinstein continues to focus on his appeal. Aidala revealed that Weinstein even joked about making a movie about his lawyer when he is released. "Arthur, when I get out of here, you will be in my first movie," he is said to have told him. For now, Weinstein's fate lies in the hands of the New York court as he hopes to overturn his conviction and move on to challenge his conviction in Los Angeles.
