The United Nations climate negotiations are about to begin in Belém, Brazil, as part of the 30th annual UN Climate Conference (COP 30). Around 50,000 people from over 190 countries, including diplomats and climate experts, are expected to attend the eleven-day meeting in the Amazon region. At this year's summit, after more than 30 years of efforts to curb global warming, heads of state and government are likely to emphasize the urgency, cooperation, and acceleration. Prior to the opening day, the president of this year's event, André Corrêa do Lago, wrote a letter to the negotiators highlighting the importance of unity. "Either we decide together for a change, or we will be forced by a tragedy. We can change. But we must do it together," he wrote in the letter. Despite Corrêa do Lago's call for unity, the United States, along with India and China, some of the world's largest polluters, will not be present. The Trump administration has not sent high-level negotiators to the talks. This is mainly due to President Donald Trump's firm stance on climate change, who had previously referred to global warming as a "hoax." Meanwhile, several countries have submitted plans known as nationally determined contributions (NDCs) signaling their efforts to reduce emissions. This year, Brazil aims to raise commitments of $25 billion and additionally raise $100 billion from global financial markets for the "Tropical Forests Forever Facility." This facility is intended to provide funds for biodiversity protection, including measures to reduce deforestation. During the two-week conference, organizers have planned 145 sessions focusing on transitioning to environmentally friendly energy sources, combating global warming, and meeting previous commitments. Although the US government has not registered an official delegation, numerous representatives from individual states and cities are expected to participate as part of the America is All In coalition.
