A massive power outage has affected the Iberian Peninsula and part of France, leaving the entire population without electricity. The islands, however, were not affected by the power outages. The power outage occurred on Monday at 12:32 pm (local time) and the causes are still unknown. The power outage led to the interruption of all rail traffic and also affected air traffic. Subway and train users were evacuated from the stations for safety reasons. The Directorate-General for Traffic has issued a statement urging citizens to avoid travel as traffic lights are out and there is a great deal of chaos in city traffic. Hospitals and media have electricity thanks to generators, but are waiting for the problem to be resolved. According to the company Red Eléctrica, an operation to restore power supply began at 1:33 pm, which will start in the north and south of the peninsula. It is estimated that solving the problem will take between 6 and 10 hours. Although the causes of the power outage are still being investigated, Eduardo Prieto, head of Red Eléctrica's services, described the incident as "extraordinary and completely unusual".
