Former President Barack Obama praised Harvard University for rejecting the conditions imposed by the Trump administration for federal funding. The White House had frozen grants of $2.2 billion and contracts of $60 million after Harvard refused to ban masks, cut diversity programs, and change departments accused of promoting antisemitism. Obama, a Harvard Law School graduate, praised the school's stance as a defense of academic freedom and democratic values. "Harvard has set an example for other colleges," said Obama, encouraging others to follow suit. He warned that resisting such pressure would require sacrifices but was necessary to uphold civil liberties and intellectual debate. The Education Department criticized Harvard's decision as elitist and non-compliant with civil rights obligations. Republicans have tightened control over elite universities amid ongoing protests in Gaza. Trump has threatened to cut off funding to several schools if they do not meet similar demands. Obama, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of resisting intimidation and preserving democratic principles.
