Donald Trump reportedly told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st state of the US if it fails to address concerns regarding border security and trade. The conversation took place at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump unveiled plans for 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports if they do not stem the flow of drugs and migrants into the US. During the three-hour meeting, Trump criticized Canada for allowing illegal immigrants from over 70 countries to cross the shared border, calling it a failure of Canada. When Trudeau opposed the tariffs and highlighted the severe economic consequences for Canada, Trump accused the country of 'ripping off' the US by contributing to a $100 billion trade deficit. Reportedly, Trump joked that Canada could instead join the US as the 51st state, suggesting that Trudeau could still hold the title of governor. The remark elicited nervous laughter, and Trump further proposed dividing Canada into a liberal and a conservative state. Despite the joke, both parties described the dinner as friendly. Canadian officials emphasized the importance of continued cooperation, while Trump maintained his stance on tariffs. Trudeau's team later described the talks as productive, although the tariff threat remains unresolved.
